Kenyan newspaper: - Not a single fire truck in Nairobi

According to Kenya's largest newspaper, The Daily Nation, there is not a single fire engine in the Nairobi region that works.

The Associated Press refers to an editorial in the newspaper last month that describes the situation as a "disgrace of biblical proportions". According to the newspaper, three fire trucks auctioned off in 2009 because the government had not paid a repair bill.

All available firefighters are on site, but according to AFP, there are problems with getting hold of enough water. Authorities ask everyone to move out of the trucks that carry water to the airport.
Fire crews in Nairobi spent 4 hours to get the fire under control at the airport today.

Ida Anna Haugen was on a plane which was en route from Doha to Nairobi today.

- The plane was about to go in for a landing when it suddenly took off again. The captain gave the message that we could not land at the airport in Nairobi due to fire, says Haugen, who is a journalist for the evening news.

- The atmosphere on the plane was very quiet, but at the same time excited. We were told that the fire has spread, but not how serious it is, says Haugen.

Their plane was diverted to Kilimanjaro as a result of the fire.
- There are many here who are wondering what to do now. We should matter to Kilimanjaro initially, but most would go off in Nairobi. Now we just wait. There is no option to send someone back to Nairobi by air
